Cass Shum (Hospitality) recently co-published a paper, "Why leader empathy backfires: relative LMX and leader work meaningfulness in predicting unethical pro-organizational behaviors," in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. Drawing on social exchange theory, this research examines how leadership empathy can backfire by prompting employees’ unethical pro-organizational behaviors, especially among leaders with low work meaningfulness. This research underscores the need to promote meaningful work for leaders as the hospitality industry continues to push leaders to be empathetic and understanding.
