Associate professor Cass Shum (Hospitality) recently published her paper, "Woke washing won’t work: The effects of inclusive cues on online employee review sites on job seekers’ application intentions," in the International Journal of Hospitality Management, with her two co-authors. The article analyzes 117 hotel management companies on Glassdoor, finding that over half (55%) show a gap between stated and crowdsourced inclusive cues. Drawing on organizational trust theory, a quasi-experiment then tests how this incongruence affects job seekers’ application intentions. Results show that while “underpromise and overdeliver” inclusive cue incongruence can benefit organizations, organizations with “overpromise and underdeliver” inclusive cue incongruence are rated as hypocrisy, reducing application intentions.
