Austin Horng-En Wang (Political Science) co-authored an op-ed, "The Taipei Mayor Election Is Not About China,"  in The Diplomat. This article is featured as the headline on the front page of The Diplomat on November 6, 2026. In this article, they argue that U.S. and China should not misinterpret the election result of the upcoming Taipei Mayor election. Even though both DPP and KMT candidates have unique backgrounds about their positions on China, their positions are moderated by the pro-status quo public opinion and the constitutional structure. Therefore, we should expect a continuity of stability on cross-strait relations no matter who wins.
