Art Gelis, Ken Czerwinski, and Dan Koury (Radiochemistry) have been notified that their proposal, "Research Traineeship for Nuclear Forensics," has been selected for a Nuclear Forensics Research Award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office. The $1,395,000 award, which is expected to start in January 2023, provides full fellowship support for first year radiochemistry PhD students, Becca Manns and Jason Victor for three years and is renewable for up to five years. The graduate students will be jointly mentored with collaborators from the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and will participate in summer experiences at the lab. The overarching goal of the program is to educate student-scientists in materials chemistry and separations of radionuclides through microfluidic techniques while developing targeted and rapid dissolution methods for characterizing post-detonation debris.
