Consultations for Longer Projects

Writing at the graduate level and beyond can be intimidating. At this stage in your academic and professional journeys, the projects for your coursework or in your field are more time and labor-intensive, and they can feel more high stakes. The UNLV Writing Center is here to help you navigate what may feel like a steep learning curve with advanced writing and assist with breaking down complex projects into manageable tasks.

Our consultants are happy to work with writers on master's theses, doctoral dissertations, abstracts, grant applications, articles for publication, research projects, and more. Because such projects are longer in nature, we encourage you to schedule routine appointments, perhaps with the same consultant, that will allow us to work with you on smaller components of these projects over time and help you stay accountable. Receiving consistent feedback can scaffold the development of your writing and keep you motivated for the long term. Of the consultation types we offer, we recommend in-person or virtual consultations for such work, as the feedback provided in OWL consultations is not immediate and is general in nature.

Because graduate level work requires in-depth research and analysis, we also encourage you to reference our handouts, particularly those related to citation styles and organizational tools, to assist with effectively managing and keeping track of sources.

Another great strategy for seeing longer writing projects through to completion is to join or form a writing group. Writing with peers can promote accountability and offer much-needed reassurance throughout the writing process. The UNLV Writing Center is happy to deliver presentations or workshops to such groups or coordinate writing retreats.

Grad College Support

The UNLV Writing Center is proud to partner with the Grad Academy at the UNLV Graduate College on sessions tailored to graduate students that are designed to teach critical writing strategies and promote meaningful reflection on writing habits. Small groups of graduate students meet and interact with peers via interactive workshops, guided peer reviews, and focused writing time, giving graduate students the support they need to not only set, but achieve, their writing goals.
