What is the Newberry Library Consortium?

Located in Chicago, the Newberry Library is an independent research library housing world-renowned collections in medieval, Renaissance, and early modern studies, as well as history, literature, art history, cartography, and music.

Our university membership opens up direct access to a wide array of funding, professional development, and presentation opportunities for both graduate students and faculty:

  • Travel Benefit Fund: Up to $3,000 annually available to support UNLV faculty and graduate student travel for research or program participation at the Newberry Library or the Folger Shakespeare Library.
  • Exclusive Fellowships: Eligibility to compete for consortium-only short-term fellowships (designated for ABD graduate students and faculty/non-tenured faculty), as well as the École Nationale des Chartes exchange fellowship.
  • Graduate Presentation & Conference Opportunities: Guaranteed inclusion of a UNLV graduate student presenter in the annual Multidisciplinary Graduate Conference.
  • Advanced Seminars & Workshops: Access to dissertation seminars, early-career research methods workshops, ten-week graduate seminars, and professional development programs.
  • Folger Reciprocity: Fee waivers for accepted applications to Folger Institute seminars.
  • Faculty Program Proposals: Opportunities for UNLV faculty to propose and host seminars, workshops, or symposia at the Newberry.

Whether your research touches on history, literature, languages, history of science, art, music, or philosophy, this membership is designed to directly support your scholarly work.

Please join us for the Zoom session to learn more about navigating the collections, applying for travel funds, and taking advantage of these research opportunities.
