HSI Resource Hub May 2026 Webinar: Community Engaged Learning (CEL) in STEM at the University of Arizona with Dr. Kate Ellingson & Priscila Ruedas
Friday, May 1, 2026 | 9-10:30 A.M. | Via Zoom
Community Engaged Learning (CEL) in STEM provides a framework for connecting academic training with real-world, place-based challenges. This seminar presents the Border Health Service-Learning Institute (BHSLI), a graduate-level course at the University of Arizona that integrates CEL within a U.S.–Mexico border context.
Following a brief overview of CEL theory, the session highlights how place-based learning is operationalized through seminars, guided reflection, and immersive field experiences with community partners across public health, agriculture, humanitarian response, and policy sectors. Evaluation of student reflections (2021–25) demonstrates that CEL strengthens systems thinking, cultural humility, and understanding of structural drivers of health.
Students also translate these experiences into practice, including internships and applied opportunities developed through course-based partnerships. Practical considerations— including logistics, partnership development, student preparation, and assessment—will be discussed. This session offers a replicable model for integrating CEL into STEM education.
