Hualiang "Harry" Teng (Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction) has been appointed as commissioner of Nevada High-Speed Rail Authority. His term began July 1 and will end June 30, 2021.

Donald Hayes (Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction) received the 2017 Dredger of the Year Award  from the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) for his extensive and outstanding contributions to the dredging community and to the association. Daniel Gerrity (Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction), Brett Levner (Film) and a group of students collaborated to create a short documentary about water conservation and reuse in Southern Nevada. Forty undergraduates recently were awarded scholarships through the office of undergraduate research's summer undergraduate research funding (OUR SURF) program. Justin Zhan (Computer Science) and Paul Oh (Mechanical Engineering) received a $600,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Site in Big Data at UNLV. Pouya Shojaeishahmirzadi (Mechanical Engineering) recently was awarded the 2017-18 UNLV Graduate College STEM Fellowship. Shojaeishahmirzadi is pursuing a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering. Professor Woosoon Yim is his advisor. The UNLV Graduate College STEM Fellowship is granted over four semesters to support newly admitted doctoral students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health sciences.

Yoohwan Kim (Computer Science) has been selected for the 2017 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program to conduct research at the Air Force Research Laboratory. Haroon Stephen (Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction) was awarded UNLV Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award at the 2017 UNLV Academic Achievement Award Ceremony on April 19. Recipient of this award must be a full-time academic faculty member who has completed five years of teaching at UNLV and has been recommended by both their supervisor and by students.
