More than 150 community stakeholders, planners, scientists, and policy experts will attend a symposium Oct. 19 at UNLV to examine the future of water resources in Southern Nevada.

"Sustainability of Southern Nevada Water Resources - At What Cost?" will explore perspectives on critical water resources issues that will likely define the future of Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. The symposium, which will be held in the Thomas and Mack Center from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., will include discussions about Southern Nevada's water management and supply system, future sustainable supply forecasts, climatology, the potential role of water reuse, and water quality and resource management.

Gwen Castaldi, senior producer and program host of KNPR's "State of Nevada" will moderate the following panel discussions:

• "The Big Picture," from 9:30 a.m. to noon
• "Quality of Life in Sustaining Southern Nevada's Resources," from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• "Wastewater, Water Quality, and Management of These Resources," from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

The evening session of the symposium, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This session, titled "Path Forward for Sustainability of Southern Nevada's Water Resources," will provide an overview of the day's earlier panels and address important issues that were left on the table regarding the sustainability of Southern Nevada's water resources.

Barbara Ginoulias, director of comprehensive planning for Clark County, will deliver the keynote speech during a luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The symposium is being sponsored by UNLV's Water Resources Program, the College of Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Additional support is being provided by Nevada Water Resources Association.
