A local artist is getting the chance of a lifetime after winning a four-year scholarship to UNLV.

Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04), Congresswoman Dina Titus (NV-01), Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-02), Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) and Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) today introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Medical Student Education Authorization Act, to authorize the Medical Student Education (MSE) Program for five years. The MSE Program provides grants to public institutions of higher education to expand or support graduate education for physicians in states with the most severe primary care provider shortages. First created in 2019 by Congressman Cole and Senator Inhofe, the MSE Program is currently subject to annual authorizations, which results in significant uncertainty over funding and long-term planning for funded institutions.

A 2021 research paper authored by Jeffrey Cummings, MD, ScD, and colleagues estimated the cumulative expenditures to fund Alzheimer disease (AD) clinical trials over the past quarter-century and highlighted the numerous failed attempts that continue to plague the field. Overall, excluding the recent approval of aducanumab (Aduhelm; Biogen), there have only been 5 drugs—all for symptomatic treatment only—that have achieved FDA approval for AD since 1995. An estimated $42.5 billion in private expenditures has been sunk into AD clinical trials since then, with phase 3 representing the highest stage for costs of research and development ($24.1B).
