Dolly Kelepecz, a 40-year resident of Las Vegas, was the principal dancer/singer in the Stardust Hotel's "Lido" and an original member of Nevada Dance Theatre. Now a new UNLV professor, she teaches Pilates in the dance department.

Why UNLV?

I used to substitute teach for (dance professor) Vassili Sulich in 1977 here on campus, so UNLV has always been on my radar. I love the campus; it feels like home to me. It is the one place that I have a connection to that has not been imploded.

What's the biggest misconception about your field?

I believe that people do not understand the discipline and fortitude it requires to succeed in ballet. With Pilates, people do not understand that it is the way to health. It is not a trendy exercise program.

What's the biggest challenge in your field?

That ballet dancers are not appreciated as athletes.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and lived in Los Angeles, Calif., until I was 19.

What was the proudest moment in your life?

When I was given a lifetime achievement award in the ballet arts from Dance Educators of America in 2012.

One tip for success?

Confidence, drive, and heart.

If you could fix one thing in the world, what would it be?

That everybody would do Pilates. Sounds silly, but if everybody did it there would be no back pain in the world.

What can't you work without?

The presence of heart. It cannot be just about the work. It must have a little soul.

What kind of professor do you want to be known as?

I want to be known as the professor who teaches the class and does not just give out assignments. I want to teach students to have great, not just good, but great critical thinking skills.
