Yonsu Kim (Healthcare Administration and Policy), Ji Won Yoo (Internal Medicine), Lorraine Brown (Healthcare Administration and Policy), Isabelle Kwak (Internal Medicine), Sheniz Moonie (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) published an article, "Widening Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Hospitalizations for Asthma with Type II Diabetes: A trend analysis (1998-2021)" in Respiratory Medicine.
This study found that hospitalizations involving both diabetes and asthma have increased significantly among racial and ethnic minority populations in the United States over the past two decades, highlighting growing health disparities. The authors analyzed national inpatient data from 1998 to 2021, including more than 4 million asthma-related hospital records and over 500,000 cases involving patients with both asthma and diabetes. They examined trends in hospitalization rates across racial and ethnic groups and found that African American patients experienced the sharpest increase, followed by Asian and Hispanic patients, while White patients showed no significant increase over time.
