Dr. Sonal Shah and fourth-year student Quinton Steere (both Dental) recently had an article published in the Journal of the American Dental Association titled "Immunotherapy with Concomitant Antibiotic Treatment: A Cautionary Case Report of a Potential Adverse Effect.” The article focuses on a 38-year-old male patient referred for an unusual clinical presentation of three well-demarcated erythematous patches on the palate, which were suspicious for precancerous lesions. The patient's medical history was remarkable for ankylosing spondylitis for which he was taking an immunotherapeutic agent adalimumab. An opportunistic candidiasis infection was suspected and the lesions responded well to antifungal treatment, thus avoiding an unnecessary biopsy. The paper concludes that oral healthcare providers should be aware of atypical manifestations of opportunistic infections in the increasing number of patients taking immunotherapy biologic medications for a wide range of autoimmune diseases.
