Shih-Chun “Steven” Chien (Law) spoke on the panel “Belonging Beyond Citizenship: Civil Rights & Asian American Advocacy” at the Penn Carey Law’s 2026 Asian Pacific American Law Students Association and the Asian Law Review Annual Conference. Drawing on his recent article with Justice Goodwin Liu and Ajay K. Mehrotra in RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences, Chien explained why so few Asian American lawyers reach leadership roles and called on the profession to reduce the role of luck in who gets mentored, sponsored, and promoted.
