Professor Shih-Chun “Steven” Chien (Law) presented his research on criminal procedure and legal education at the Taiwan Law and Society Association’s Second Annual Meeting at National Chengchi University. Based on an empirical study of 68 U.S. law school syllabi, Chien described the syllabus as a course’s “opening statement.” He noted that while syllabi outline what students need to know, they rarely define what students will learn to do and called on legal educators to teach students both how to see the world through law and how to challenge established perspectives.
