Matthew Childs, Ph.D., (World Languages and Culture) delivered a talk titled "Race, Colonialism, and Imperialism: Notes from a German Culture Classroom" at the German Studies Association annual conference in Phoenix (September 24–27). Part of a panel about "Controversy and/in the Classroom: Teaching Contentious Topics in the German Language and Culture Classroom," which he co-organized with Jeffrey Jarzomb (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), the paper explored his experience teaching a course about the history of race-thinking in Germany. Using a range of materials, Childs reflected on and critically engaged with the challenges and opportunities of teaching such topics in higher education today.
