Louisa Messenger (Environmental and Global Health) published "Operationalising Environmental DNA (eDNA) Detection of Major Malaria Vector Species in Ghana" in Molecular Ecology Resources. Her team tested a low-cost water sampling method that can detect malaria mosquitoes and their insecticide resistance genes just from DNA left behind in breeding sites, including the first known report of one resistance mutation in Ghana. The method was designed to be simple enough for community members to use, without special training or equipment. The paper was coauthored with researchers from the University of Ghana, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine.
