Linc Johnson (Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education) presented his research study, "Globalization as a Social Science Problem: Applying the Johnson Ranking of Global Engagement (JRGE) at UNLV," at the National Social Science Association Conference in Las Vegas. This paper re-conceptualizes global engagement as an analytically tractable phenomenon and introduces the Johnson Ranking of Global Engagement (JRGE), a multidimensional scorecard designed to assess how universities operationalize globalization across teaching, research, service, and institutional infrastructure.
Using UNLV as a case study, the research employs a mixed-methods design integrating document analysis, institutional data, and indicator-based scoring. The study contributes a novel measurement framework that advances transparency, contextualization, and institutional learning. Rather than reinforcing competitive hierarchies, the JRGE offers a diagnostic tool for strategic planning, equity-oriented resource allocation, and accountability. The paper concludes by outlining the framework’s scalability and applicability across institutional contexts, positioning the JRGE as a transferable model for advancing the empirical study of globalization in higher education.
