Whitney Elks, Declan Feery, Celica Cosme, Kavita Batra, Lance Horner, Charles St. Hill, and Ovunc Bardakcioglu (all Medicine) published a study, “Comparison of Surgical Treatment Patterns and Temporal Trends for Stage I–III Invasive Rectal Adenocarcinoma Among Regions in the United States,” in Heliyon. Using National Cancer Database data (2004–2019), the team analyzed 160,070 cases and found a national increase in anterior resection (AR) with a corresponding decline in abdominoperineal resection (APR), alongside significant regional variation in surgical approach and technique. The findings highlight evolving practice patterns in rectal cancer surgery and underscore persistent geographic differences in care delivery.
