Kavita Batra (Medicine), in collaboration with Kyra Morgan (the lead author), Stephanie Woodard, Erika Ryst, Paul Devereux, and Wei Yang, recently published their study, “Bridging the Data Divide in Nevada: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study of Birth Certificate and Medicaid Billing Discrepancies in Gestational Substance Exposure,” in the journal Healthcare. The study evaluates discrepancies between birth certificate data and Medicaid billing records in identifying gestational substance exposure, uncovering important gaps in surveillance and reporting systems. The findings emphasize the need for improved data integration and accuracy to better inform public health policy, maternal–child health interventions, and resource allocation across Nevada. Morgan and Batra previously collaborated on COVID-19 surveillance initiatives during Morgan’s tenure as a state biostatistician. Dr. Batra’s research focuses on maternal and child health, including neonatal abstinence syndrome, prematurity, and broader neonatal health outcomes.
