Kavita Batra (Medicine), in collaboration with the GBD 2021 Dietary Iron Deficiency Collaborators, has co-authored a landmark study titled, "Global, regional, and national burden of dietary iron deficiency from 1990 to 2021: a Global Burden of Disease Study," published in Nature Medicine. The study reveals that despite notable global progress, dietary iron deficiency remains a significant public health challenge affecting 16.7% of the global population, with a disproportionate impact on women, children, and populations in low-Socio-demographic Index (SDI) countries. The authors call for urgent action, recommending targeted iron supplementation, enhanced food security, and fortification strategies to address this ongoing burden.
