Dr. Christina Demopoulos (Dental) led a webinar titled, “HPV and Oropharyngeal Cancer — The Need for Greater Action,” during a Spotlight series sponsored by the Association of State & Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD), which identified updates to the ASTDD policy about HPV and oropharyngeal cancer. HPV now accounts for 60% to 70% of these cancers and is affecting a broad population of younger people without typical risk factors. The policy, which Dr. Demopolous authored in 2017 and updated last year with Dr. Tina Brandon Abbatangelo (Dental), calls for stronger action from oral health programs and dental professionals to promote vaccination through education, partnerships, and a coordinated focus on prevention.
