Bailey Gosse, Kimberly Nguyen, and alumna Zoe Zelensky, in collaboration with Kai-Yu Ho and Thessa Hilgenkamp (all Physical Therapy), conducted research examining the effects of footwear on gait quality and walking speed in adults with Down syndrome. The study compared supportive footwear, unsupportive footwear, and barefoot walking in 20 adults with Down syndrome. Findings demonstrated that supportive footwear was associated with fewer gait deviations and faster walking speeds compared with barefoot and unsupportive footwear conditions. This collaborative work highlights the contributions of UNLV physical therapy students and faculty to clinically relevant research aimed at advancing mobility and evidence-based physical therapy practice.
