Hart & Winnie Wegner Award for Film Studies

The Hart & Winnie Wegner Award for Film Studies was established to celebrate outstanding achievement in film studies (history, criticism, and theory).

Applying for the Award

For the 2019 award, we are accepting essay entries on the topic of “How Cinematic Style Affected My Experience of a Film.”

Your essay should have a creative title and make a specific argument about the way(s) in which one or more elements of cinematic style impacted your understanding and appreciation of a film. These could include:

  • Mise-en-scène (lighting, costumes & make-up, setting, performance, etc)
  • Cinematography (camera movement, camera position, lens choice, color palette, etc)
  • Editing choices (shot duration, rhythm, relationships, patterns, etc)
  • Sound (music, effects, dialogue, narration, silence, etc)

Entries must be 1500-2000 words. All UNLV film majors and/or students from other majors who have taken at least two film courses at UNLV are eligible to apply for the award. Only one entry per student may be submitted. (If you make an error and wish to re-submit your essay, start a new application. Only your most recent submission will be considered.)
