Forging the next great generation of world-changing entrepreneurs and innovators
The UNLV Office of Economic Development is advancing student commercialization efforts through RebelForge, an initiative that fosters the young minds of future entrepreneurs and innovators by cultivating the resources, knowledge, and skillsets essential to the development process of a successful startup.
The most common obstacle to starting a business is lack of capital. And we get it, you’re broke college students (hey, we were all there once). That’s why RebelForge provides micro-grants to help get your venture off the ground. Yes, you heard that right…FREE MONEY to help student entrepreneurs!
Funding requests will start out with a maximum limit of $1,000 per project. Larger funding requests may be allowed at the discretion of RebelForge on a case-by-case basis. Funds can be used for hard costs like equipment, materials, supplies, etc., however, the money cannot be used to pay salaries or wages of students working on the business. Invoices or quotes must be submitted to RebelForge so we can purchase your items through UNLV approved vendors when possible.
RebelForge offers access to makerspace and prototyping labs to help students bring their ideas to life. Whether you need a 3D printer to create one-of-a-kind widgets, a vinyl cutter for custom designs, or a green screen and photo studio for product shots and promotional footage, we’ll make sure to get you the space and equipment necessary to help launch your startup.
Intellectual property is the underlying value behind your idea. RebelForge can assist in protecting your IP with:
Patents – A patent is a form of intellectual property that gives its owner the legal right to exclude others from making, using, selling, and importing an invention for a limited period of years, in exchange for publishing an enabling public disclosure of the invention.
Copyrights – A copyright is a form of intellectual property that grants the creator of an original creative work an exclusive legal right to determine whether and under what conditions this original work may be copied and used by others, usually for a limited term of years.
Trademarks – A trademark is a recognizable sign, design, or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others, although trademarks used to identify services are usually called service marks.
RebelForge connects student entrepreneurs with local mentors and subject-matter experts to help provide guidance on how best to commercialize innovations. Our network of professionals and technical experts have been in your shoes before and understand what it takes to be successful. Students can learn from their successes, as well as their failures, while building off the knowledge, skills, and experience our support community brings to the table.
How do you know if it’s a good time to be in your industry? Where should you physically set up shop to reach the largest segments of your target market? What’s an industry or target market? If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, then RebelForge is here to help! We provide marketing and industry research reports to help you make well-informed business decisions.
Every idea or startup is someone’s “baby.” And if you don’t already know this, you don’t ever want to tell somebody they have an ugly baby, i.e. a bad business idea. However, in entrepreneurship there is a saying that if you’re going to fail, “fail quick, fail cheap.” RebelForge can help determine if your business idea is feasible, whether your technology is ready to be deployed in the market, or if you have an ugly baby that just needs a little bit of makeup… or a whole lot of contouring. Either way, we’ll help make sure you’re adequately prepared to begin your entrepreneurial journey.
