Webinar: "Rooted in Relevance: Place-Based Learning in Mathematics" with Monika Neda Nov. 7

HSI Resource Hub Webinar: Rooted in Relevance: Place-Based Learning in Mathematics with Monika Neda

Place-based learning offers powerful opportunities to connect STEM education to the life experiences, communities, and cultural contexts of our students. By linking math concepts to the environments and social settings where students live, learn, and work, this approach makes STEM more meaningful and accessible. This webinar will explore how integrating place-based learning strategies can transform STEM education, particularly at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and emerging HSIs.

Date: Friday, Nov. 7, 2025

Time: 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (PST)

The session will begin with a brief theoretical overview of place-based learning, then transition into concrete classroom examples, including highlights from the UNLV Math Game Project. Participants will gain insight into the educational benefits of this approach, from increased engagement and motivation to stronger connections with local communities and cultures. The webinar will conclude with an interactive discussion and a practical resource designed to help faculty adapt and implement place-based learning strategies at their own institutions.

All webinars will be hosted via Zoom. Please register in advance to receive a calendar invite with login information
