UNLV Selected for National Effort to Strengthen Career-Connected Learning

UNLV is one of just 16 colleges and universities nationwide chosen to participate in From Campus to Career, a national initiative supported by Lumina Foundation that’s designed to scale high-impact practices and strengthen workforce outcomes for students.

Through the initiative, UNLV will receive $100,000 over two years to strengthen career-connected learning opportunities. High-impact practices such as internships, undergraduate research, service learning, capstone projects, and student employment are widely associated with increased student engagement, deeper learning, and higher completion rates. Nearly all of UNLV graduates (99.6%) complete at least one high-impact learning experience that builds critical thinking, communication, and applied skills tied to career success.

UNLV’s grant-funded project will expand on existing university practices that increase students' career readiness through strategies that embed durable skills, strengthen pathways that connect learning to meaningful work, and survey students and employers to assess what’s working.

The university will develop 12 new non-credit-bearing microcredentials focused on in-demand and translatable skills such as communication, critical thinking, professionalism, and initiative, and embed them into high-enrollment courses in close collaboration with faculty. This continues UNLV’s rapid expansion of microcredential offerings over the past two years. The project will also enhance registration and catalog systems, building on UNLV’s existing course-tagging initiative, to help students easily identify and enroll in relevant courses.

Lumina launched From Campus to Career to help institutions scale practices that strengthen the value of a bachelor’s degree. The 16 selected institutions represent a cross-section of higher education and will serve as national models for integrating academic learning with career preparation.

The initiative is led at UNLV by the Office of Undergraduate Education and High-Impact Practices, UNLV Online, the Teaching & Learning Commons, and the UNLV Registrar. In addition to the Lumina Foundation, From Campus to Career is managed in partnership with Excelencia in Education, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the Center for Innovation in Postsecondary Education.
