With generous support from the College of Fine Arts and the College of Liberal Arts, UNLV is now part of the Newberry Library’s Renaissance Studies Consortium. The Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois houses a vast collection of archival material, including manuscripts, printed books, and engravings that range across geographies and subject areas. The collection is particularly strong in the areas of early modern colonialism, art history, maps, travel and exploration, music and dance, religion, and book history. The Center for Renaissance Studies regularly hosts scholars and workshops to support the latest work in premodern studies. For more on their latest and forthcoming events, please see the included events calendar.
As a Consortium member, UNLV faculty and students receive funding to travel to Chicago to participate in seminars and conferences housed at the Newberry as well as those at their partnership institutions, such as the Folger Library in Washington D.C. and the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. Faculty and students also have the opportunity to apply to the Newberry’s competitive fellowships to conduct research at the Newberry.
The Newberry Library holds graduate and undergraduate seminars each year, including courses focused on ancient languages and research methods. Other recent programs have focused on authors such as Giovanni Boccaccio and seminars for undergraduate and graduate scholars in research methodology. Additionally, faculty may propose a Newberry-sponsored undergraduate or graduate workshop or seminar that can be held either entirely in Chicago or in a hybrid format.
Currently, UNLV faculty and students are able to apply to spring 2027 workshops and conferences, which range from topics on Renaissance textiles to premodern violence. Further information can be found at their website.
As new members of this consortium, we additionally would like to form a campus working group that fosters collaboration among undergraduate and graduate students and faculty interested in the early modern period.
