In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Student Diversity Programs (SDP) in collaboration with the Barrick Museum of Art invite UNLV faculty and staff to participate in the Latinx Mini Con, a half-day program showcasing scholarly perspectives on Latinx identity, community, and lived experience.

This academic gathering highlights the intersections of research, practice, and culture, and provides space for dialogue across disciplines. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend the full program or individual sessions as schedules permit.

Program Schedule

• 11:00 AM – Virality con Corazón: Latinx Creators and Building a Brand
  
  Dr. Arthur Soto-Vasquez, Assistant Professor, Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies
  
  This session examines how Latinx influencers and digital creators shape online culture through creativity, identity, and community. Discussion will also address the role of algorithms in facilitating connections with diverse audiences.

• 12:00 PM – Care Across Gender and Generations in Latinx Families
  
  Dr. Ivan Sandoval-Cervantes, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology
  
  This session explores care responsibilities within Latinx families, highlighting the intersections of gender roles, intergenerational dynamics, and shifting cultural expectations. Dr. Sandoval-Cervantes will draw upon both ethnographic research and personal insights.

• 1:00 PM – Dream Deferred & Futures Reimagined
  
  Nicole Stella, Director, Office of the Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education & High-Impact Practice
  
  This session considers how colleges and universities can better support students with intersecting identities. Emphasis will be placed on strategies that foster belonging, inclusion, and pathways to success for Latinx and other historically underrepresented student populations.
