Risk Management & Safety (RMS) asks the campus community to keep fire safety protocols top of mind and never enter an area that is actively on fire. No one should enter an area, until the Fire Department has arrived, assessed the situation, and confirmed the area safe.
Active fire conditions present serious hazards, including:
- Extreme heat that can cause severe injury within seconds
- Toxic smoke and gases that can quickly overwhelm individuals
- Low visibility that increases the risk of disorientation and entrapment
- Structural instability and the potential for collapse
Only trained emergency responders with the proper protective equipment, including turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus, should entire a fire area.
Entering a burning space without the right training and equipment puts your life at significant risk, endangers others, and can disrupt emergency response efforts.
In a fire emergency, use R.A.C.E to guide your actions:
- RESCUE: Only help those in immediate danger if you can do so safely, without putting yourself at risk.
- ALERT: Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station. Warn others by shouting "Fire, Fire, Fire!" and call 911 once you are in a safe location
- CONTAIN: Close doors behind you as your leave. This helps slow the spread of flames and smoke.
- EVACUATE: Leave the building immediately using the nearest exit. Do not stop for personal items and do not use elevators.
Once you are outside, stay outside. Do not re-enter the building for any reason until Police or Fire officials have given the all-clear. Property can be replaced. You cannot.
