The UNLV offices of Educational Compliance and Accessibility Resources have the privilege of recognizing Heather Ortiz, director of communication for Business Affairs, as our December 2023 Rebel Accessibility Hero.

When it comes to accessibility, Ortiz is tireless. She champions accessibility in her work, with her own team of employees, with her colleagues, and she isn’t afraid to lead or speak up in division-wide meetings. She is the person you would want on your side when you look to secure and retain administrative buy-in for an accessibility initiative.

Ortiz was a founding part of the Business Affairs Accessibility Ambassadors program, and has been a major steward of the program as it runs. Alongside a co-presenter, she created presentations about this program and presented them at local and regional conferences. She has influenced change in the way her division communicates. Ortiz and her team have overseen the organization and remediation of hundreds of inaccessible documents. The impact she has had on the divisions of Business Affairs and Human Resources is hard to overstate, she has made UNLV a more welcoming and inclusive environment for years to come.
