Black History Month Events at UNLV

Student Connection & Engagement invites UNLV faculty and staff to join us throughout February for Black History Month programming focused on learning, dialogue, reflection, and community connection. Faculty and staff presence is welcomed across all events and plays an important role in supporting meaningful student engagement and a strong sense of campus belonging.

Below is a snapshot of this year’s Black History Month events. 

Black History Month Kickoff

Thursday, February 5 | 5:00–7:30 PM

Richard Tam Alumni Center

A high-energy opening celebration featuring a resource fair, live DJ, soul food, and a 106 & Park–inspired theme. This event sets the tone for the month and brings the campus community together.

Between the Lines

Tuesday, February 10 | 1:00–3:00 PM

Student Union 208A

A cozy, creative space centered on Black storytelling, reflection, and community care. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to crochet in a relaxed, beginner-friendly environment. In partnership with UNLV Wellness Zone. Refreshments will be provided.

Good Trouble, Necessary Trouble

Wednesday, February 11 | 5:30–8:00 PM

Barrick Museum Auditorium

A panel discussion exploring Black resistance, civil disobedience, and collective action across generations, with opportunities for dialogue and reflection. Refreshments will be provided by Sista Kim's Kitchen.

Real Talk

Thursday, February 12 | 1:00–3:00 PM

Student Union 209

Real Talk is a bi-monthly facilitated dialogue series. In recognition of Black History Month, this session will be facilitated by Dr. Valerie Taylor and will focus on colorism and texturism and their impact on Black identity, beauty standards, and self-worth. Lunch will be provided by House of Dutch Pot.

Thriving Authentically

Wednesday, February 18 | 1:00–3:00 PM

Student Union 208BC

A career panel and networking experience focused on navigating professional spaces while staying true to identity and values. Students have expressed strong interest in engaging with faculty and staff at this event. In partnership with Career Services and Workforce Development. Lunch will be provided.

Black Mini Con

Tuesday, February 24 | 11:00 AM–2:00 PM

Barrick Museum Auditorium

A half-day convening featuring interactive sessions centered on Black LGBTQIA+ identity, mental health, resilience, and belonging. Faculty and staff presence is especially impactful for student learning and community building. Lunch will be provided by Calabash African Kitchen.

Historic Westside Bus Tour

Thursday, February 26 | 10:00 AM–3:00 PM

Check-in at Student Union 228

A guided experiential learning opportunity highlighting the history, culture, and legacy of Black communities in Las Vegas’ Historic Westside. Space is limited.
