The origin of the term “paramedic” is from the military. Medics, often called corpsmen, were trained to care for injured military personnel in the battlefield setting and in field hospitals. Despite the rumors, the term paramedic had nothing to do with parachutes. It simply meant that they were “non-doctors” (paraprofessionals) who provided medical care in the military setting.
