A presentation on poetry delivered by a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and a discussion on the cultural behaviors of international visitors will be the next two events in the University Forum lecture series.
Harvard University humanities professor Jorie Graham, who won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in poetry, will discuss the current state of literary anthologies in her lecture, "You Call That Poetry? The Poetry Anthology in 2000 and Beyond," at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in Frank and Estella Beam Hall, Room 224.
Graham will share her views on the current trend toward diversity in anthologies and discuss whether it is driven by college English departments, reading audiences, or market reality. She will also discuss, her editorial role in the anthologies "The Best American Poetry" and 'The Best 100 Poems in the English Language."
On Nov. 3, Andrew Nazarechuk, a UNLV tourism and convention administration professor, will discuss "Understanding the Cultural Behaviors of the International Visitor." His lecture is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
Nazarechuk has traveled extensively throughout Asia, witnessing the diverse cultures there. In his lecture, he will discuss many of the behavioral customs of China, Japan, and Korea and explain how to understand their meanings.
According to Nazarechuk, understanding these cultures is becoming increasingly important as international travel continues to grow each year and as cultural interaction between the United States and Asia becomes more commonplace.
