Honors: Vonita Chawla

Dr. Vonita Chawla (Medicine), a third-year pediatric resident, recently won the "Outstanding Poster Presentation Award" at the Western Student and Resident Medical Research Forum in Carmel, California. She competed against dozens of resident physicians from across the Western United States.

Her presentation was about a newborn baby suffering from a disease of the liver. The child also had a specific gene deletion (1p36) known to cause severe intellectual disabilities. This is the first time this combination has been reported. Chawla's presentation underscored the importance of reporting all anomalies so further study can be performed.
