Tarryn McGhie (Nursing) and UNLV alum Rebekah Piper, '07 BS Education, '09 Master of Education, '15 PhD Education, now of Texas A&M University-San Antonio, have published a chapter titled "Family Discussions of Race Impacting Children's PK-12 Schooling." This chapter was the result of a dual study in which discussions of race and literacy were the focus and how it impacted youth's PK-12 experiences in school. The studies included young adults who were previously incarcerated and elementary-aged children. This chapter is published in a book co-edited by UNLV alum Theodore Ransaw, '99 BA Communication Studies and '12 PhD Education, now of Michigan State University. The book is titled "Teaching to Close the Achievement Gap for Students of Color: Understanding the Impact of Factors Outside the Classroom."
