Shaikh Arifuzzaman (Computer Science) is leading a three-year project with collaborators at the University of Kansas to address one of the fundamental challenges in earthquake science: understanding how active fault systems are organized, connected, and evolve across some of the world's most tectonically active regions. Backed by a $590,000 National Science Foundation award, Arifuzzaman will extend his work in AI and scalable computing into Earth-system science while creating new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and student training.
