UNLV School of Medicine students helped advance state policy at the 2025 Nevada State Medical Association (NSMA) Annual House of Delegates with the adoption of Resolution E23, Address Public Health Risks of Online Sports Betting. The resolution was led by Ryan Jannoud, with coauthors Eileen Enriquez and Gwen Metcalf (all Medicine). The policy highlights Nevada’s central role in the gambling industry, the rapid expansion of online sports betting, and emerging evidence linking early exposure and aggressive advertising practices to increased rates of gambling disorder, particularly among young adults. It calls for strengthened programs to address problem gambling, enhanced education for Nevada physicians and medical students on screening and treatment of gambling disorder, and updated epidemiological prevalence studies to better reflect current risk patterns, emphasizing harm reduction, clinician preparedness, and data-driven policy.
