Honors: Musiette McKinney

Musiette McKinney (CAEO) has been named the recipient of the inaugural University of Nevada, Reno, Las Vegas office for prospective students Bruce Shively Advocate of the Year Award. The word “advocate” has many definitions: champion, supporter, promoter, spokesperson, campaigner, and crusader.  McKinney, the UNLV GEAR UP coordinator, has proven to be all of those and more in her long career of assisting and supporting students from diverse backgrounds throughout Southern Nevada in achieving their postsecondary educational goals.  Her efforts are well known and admired throughout the educational community. She always is ready to assist those in need by offering guidance and resources. Her remarkable energy and passion along with her tireless efforts and commitment have affected the lives of countless students and their families. She always finds a way to give a little extra, with new and inventive workshops, as well as through direct interaction with schools, students ,and their communities.

Lessons learned from her brother, Michael, prompted Dr. Kate Martin to develop an Honors College course that will urge students to consider the needs of those with differences.
