Gary Totten (Faculty Affairs) has published an article, “Technologies of Uplift: Race and Beauty in Edith Wharton’s Twilight Sleep,” in the journal MFS: Modern Fiction Studies. The article examines how early twentieth-century theories of race, beauty, and women’s health and reproduction influence the representation of women’s bodies and identities in Edith Wharton’s 1927 novel Twilight Sleep. Totten argues that the novel reflects Wharton’s own concerns about racial identity, gender expectations, and modern US culture.
