Gary Totten (Faculty Affairs) has published a book titled, Theodore Dreiser and the Cultures of Travel (Routledge). The book is the first sustained analysis of the late 19th- and early 20th-century travel narratives and diaries of Theodore Dreiser, an influential U.S. writer. The book discusses prominent themes in Dreiser's travel writing, including labor, class struggle, race, gender and sexuality, immigration, tourist and visual culture, and concerns about U.S. progress. The book enhances scholars’ understanding of Dreiser’s narrative style and provides new insights into how his perspective on American culture at the turn of the 20th century was informed by his travel experiences and mobility.
