Dr. Gerald Higgins Scholarship Athletic Training Student Award

The Dr. Gerald Higgins Scholarship Athletic Training Student Award is presented annually to the UNLV athletic training student who achieves academic excellence, satisfies the standards of the National Athletic Trainers Association, and demonstrates the characteristics necessary to be employed as a certified athletic trainer. The $500 scholarship is named in honor of UNLV Team Physician Gerald Higgins, who has been the Team Orthopedic Surgeon since the early 1970s, and is a member of the UNLV Athletic Department Hall of Fame and the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame. Completed applications are due October 17.

Leta Orr Scholarship Athletic Training Student Award

The Leta Orr Scholarship Athletic Training Student Award is presented annually to the undergraduate student who exhibits academic excellence and demonstrates community service. The $500 award is named after the mother of Dr. Daniel Orr, who has been the UNLV team maxillofacial surgeon since the early 1980s. Completed applications are due February 5.

The Rainone Family Scholarship

The Rainone Family Scholarship is presented annually to the undergraduate student who exhibits excellence in the academic setting, clinical setting, and community service. Joseph Rainone is a graduate of Clark High School and the UNLV Athletic Training program, a licensed athletic trainer, and a partner in physical therapy clinics throughout Las Vegas. Completed applications for the $500 scholarship are due April 1.

Far West Athletic Trainers Association District 8 Scholarship Awards

The Far West Athletic Trainers Association/District 8 (FWATAD8) currently sponsors eight scholarships available to athletic training students within the FWATA/District 8. Recipients of each scholarship receive a $1,500 monetary award and a plaque. All of the awards are given to promote the education and profession of athletic training as well as to recognize some of the outstanding students who represent the future of the athletic training profession. National Athletic Trainers Association Foundation Scholarship Program

The NATA Foundation Scholarship program awards undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral scholarships. The number of scholarships varies annually (from 50 to 75), with the amount of the award currently being $2,300 per scholarship. Scholarship funding is secured through a variety of sources, including the organization’s endowment program as well as corporate and individual support.
