Extended Sick Leave The university offers extended paid sick leave (granted by the university president) for academic and administrative faculty members who have exhausted their sick leave and are unable to return to work.

Topic Description
Accrual 16 hours per month for administrative faculty and academic faculty on 12-month contracts. Academic faculty on 9-month contracts are not eligible for annual leave.

Carry-Over Maximum 384 hours to the next fiscal year. Excess is forfeited. To avoid forfeiture, request annual leave no later than April 1.

Maximum of 384 hours unless you are directed, in writing, to use all or a portion of accumulated leave prior to your final date of contract.

Faculty on an "A" contract at the School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine are not eligible for annual leave payout. All accrued annual leave must be used prior to separation. Leave requests must be submitted to appointing authority prior to separation. Unused annual leave will be forfeited with no payout.

Special Sick Leave Bank Unused sick leave in excess of the annual 720 hour carryover limit will be placed in your “special sick leave bank” and is limited to one half of the unused sick leave accrued during that year. These additional hours are banked in December each year. A portion may be eligible for payout at termination

Annual Cash Out

Employees employed at UNLV by January 1, 2024 who are members of designated collective bargaining units may cash out annual leave twice per year, in May and November only. Please review your bargaining unit’s agreement for specific provisions and applicability.

Letter of Appointment, Part-time Employees and Instructors, Temporary Hourly Workers

You do not accrue annual or sick leave. If you need time off, discuss available options with your immediate supervisor.

Requesting Annual or Sick Leave

  • Time off requests are submitted through Workday. Refer to the Managing Time Off Workday Job Aid for step-by-step guidance.
  • Annual leave must be requested and approved in advance by your supervisor or other appropriate administrative officer. 
  • Sick leave is paid time off and may be used for:
    • Personal illness
    • Care of family members with illness, injury, medical, optometry, or dental appointments (up to 15 days of sick leave per year)
    • Death of an immediate family member within the third degree of consanguinity (up to 10 days per year for administrative and academic faculty; up to 5 days per year for classified staff)

Leave of Absence Programs

UNLV offers leave of absence programs that permit employees to take authorized time off for personal, medical, or family reasons, in accordance with federal or state regulations.

Note: Leave programs may run concurrently with one another or other employee leave entitlements.
