The Ph.D. program embodies the ultimate expression of the History Department’s mission to generate and disseminate new knowledge through research, analysis, and publication. The three areas of concentration are: North American West, North American Culture and Society, and European Culture and Society. Students can also minor in North American, European, World, and Public History.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Ph.D. program in History, students are able to:
- Solve problems, think critically, and communicate effectively.
- Articulate an awareness of the role historians play in the construction of the past and of the ways in which the contemporary context impacts the work historians do.
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the content and historiography of an extensive body of scholarly material in a major field defined by a historical period, geographic region or regions, and/or theme.
- Understand important theoretical and historiographical approaches to their major field.
- Formulate an original research project, identify and examine pertinent sources within the context of existing scholarly literature on the subject, and construct a well-organized, carefully-written dissertation of substantial length.
Career Possibilities
A Ph.D. in History provides students with the skills necessary for success in a wide range of careers and professions in education, law, business, historic preservation, and public relations.
