Thanks to a Nevada Library Services and Technology Act grant, University Libraries has successfully digitized the Las Vegas Sentinel-Voice, a historic newspaper dedicated to providing news and information to the African American community in Las Vegas. Spanning a publication period from 1964 to 2013, this comprehensive digitization project preserves a valuable resource for researchers, scholars, and the community.

The American Water Works Association named UNLV engineering graduate Padmanabhan 'Pad' Krishnaswamy's master's thesis the best in the nation. Krishnaswamy explored the emergence of disinfection byproducts in wastewater, specifically during the pandemic. This groundbreaking research not only raised awareness about byproducts in our wastewater, but also provided valuable insight for water managers across the country.

UNLV Athletics celebrated a historic achievement as a record-breaking 73 student-athletes qualified for the Fall 2022 Academic All-Mountain West Team by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Demonstrating exceptional academic commitment, Rebels football led the way with an impressive 33 student-athletes making the list, followed by women's soccer with 21 students, volleyball with 11 students, and cross country with eight students.

Nevada has a lot riding on lithium, a key component in electric vehicle batteries. But those batteries can catch fire in a crash. A polymer created by chemistry professor Pradip Bhowmik is making them more fire resistant. And, in a great example of how academic research spurs economic development, his work has led to a Las Vegas startup company, now housed at UNLV’s Black Fire Innovation, to bring the idea to market.

UNLV is set to make a significant contribution to Southern Nevada's healthcare sector through a $3 million grant from Nevada's Department of Health & Human Services. The university will support 75 graduate students training to become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. UNLV's Physics and Astronomy department is at the forefront of astrophysics, with professor Bing Zhang and an international team of astrophysicists' discovery of a unique cosmological gamma-ray burst that defies prevailing theories of how the violent cosmic explosions form. This remarkable burst, described as an "oddball," has led the team to propose a new model specific to certain types of bursts.

UNLV research professor Kristen Averyt has been named the director for drought and western resilience for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. With a long track record in diverse climate-related fields, including western water resources, the energy-water nexus, and climate resilience and adaptation, Averyt is poised to drive transformative actions and policies in the U.S.
