Planning an exciting international adventure as part of your student experience at UNLV? Whether you're studying abroad, presenting at a conference, conducting research, or participating in a performance, we're here to support you every step of the way.

To ensure your safety and well-being while you're abroad, and to comply with university policies, all students participating in UNLV-related international travel are required to complete this registration form. This helps us understand your travel plans and provide you with the necessary resources and support for a successful and safe trip.

  • Funded in full or in part by UNLV.
  • A mandatory or optional component of your academic studies (e.g., study abroad programs, international internships, field research for a course or thesis).
  • Part of a UNLV-organized or sponsored professional development program.

Understanding UNLV's International Travel Policies for Students

Your safety is our top priority. UNLV closely monitors international travel advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Our policies are in place to align with their expertise and ensure the well-being of our students.

  • Level 4 Travel Advisories (Do Not Travel): Travel to or through countries and/or regions designated as Level 4 is strictly prohibited for UNLV-related student travel.
  • Level 3 Travel Advisories (Reconsider Travel): Travel to or through countries and/or regions designated as Level 3 will require an additional approval process. Our office will contact these students with additional instructions.
  • Regional Restrictions: Even if a country has a Level 1 or 2 advisory, travel to specific regions within that country designated as Level 4 is prohibited, and travel to Level 3 regions will require special approval.

We encourage you to review the U.S. Department of State's travel advisory page for your destination country. You can find detailed maps and regional information by selecting the "View Larger Map" option on their website.

FAQs

Some questions on the registration form are required. We recommend reviewing the "What You'll Need to Register" section and gathering all necessary details, such as flight information, lodging addresses, and program specifics, before you begin the form. This will ensure a smooth and efficient registration process.

While we recommend completing the form in one sitting (approximately 20-30 minutes), if you close the survey midway and reopen it in the same browser, it may be possible for the survey to resume where you left off. However, we cannot guarantee that it will always function that way.

For significant changes to your international travel plans after submitting the form, you may need to submit a new registration. For minor adjustments, please contact the Office of Study Abroad Programs at studyabroad@unlv.edu with the specific details of the changes you need to make. Please make the subject of your email:

Once you submit your International Travel Student Registration Form, you will receive a confirmation message. Our office will review your information, and we may contact you if we require further clarification or if your travel destination has a Level 3 travel advisory, in which case additional approval processes will be necessary. The registration helps us understand your travel plans so we can provide you with relevant safety information, resources, and support during your time abroad.

Yes, if your international travel is for a UNLV purpose, such as presenting at a conference or participating in a performance on behalf of the university, you are required to complete this registration form, even if you are traveling independently.

Yes, even if you are participating in a faculty-led program where the faculty member has submitted trip details, each student is still required to complete their own individual International Travel Student Registration Form. This ensures we have your specific information and emergency contacts.

You should check with the organizers of your specific program (e.g., study abroad program coordinator, faculty leader) to determine if international travel insurance is included. If it is not, the registration form will provide links to approved insurance options that you will need to purchase.

We provide links to the US DOS travel advisory page in the “Understanding UNLV's International Travel Policies for Students” on this page. We encourage you to review the advisory for your specific destination, paying close attention to the overall level and any regional advisories by selecting the "View Larger Map" option on their site.

UNLV closely monitors the U.S. Department of State and CDC travel advisories. If your destination's advisory level changes after you have registered:

  • Level 4 (Do Not Travel): Travel to or through the affected country or region is strictly prohibited for UNLV-related student travel. We will contact you to discuss necessary changes to your plans.
  • Level 3 (Reconsider Travel): We will contact you to initiate an additional approval process, which may involve providing further justification for your travel and implementing additional safety measures.

No, STEP is only available for U.S. citizens. However, your country of citizenship may have a similar program that would be able to give you travel alerts and helpful information for the duration of your travel. If you are an international student or scholar, we also recommend that you check in with the office of International Student and Scholar Compliance for guidance on traveling internationally.

If your international travel is organized by a student organization that is not directly funded or officially sponsored by UNLV, and it doesn't fall under any of the other criteria for UNLV-related travel (e.g., for academic credit, representing UNLV at a competition), then this registration form may not be required. However, if you are unsure, please contact the Office of Study Abroad Programs at studyabroad@unlv.edu to clarify.

Students are expected to submit this form one month prior to their international departure date. If your departure is less than a month away, please complete the registration form as soon as possible. This will help us provide you with the necessary information and support within the limited timeframe.

You can submit the registration form as soon as your international travel plans are finalized and you have all the required information. There is no specific earliest submission date, but we recommend doing so at least one month before your departure to allow sufficient time for review and any necessary follow-up.
