Health Insurance Requirements for Graduate and Professional Students

In May 2013, the Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA) passed a motion to recommend that all fully admitted graduate and professional students must have health insurance coverage either through UNLV or their own carrier. In June 2013, the NSHE Board of Regents supported and approved this proposal. As a result, the mandatory hard waiver student health insurance policy went into effect for the fall 2013 semester and beyond.

Student Health Insurance (SHI)

The UNLV Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is a medical insurance plan available to UNLV enrolled graduate, law, international, medical, dental, and nursing students. SHIP covers services received from off-campus community providers in addition to the services available at the on-campus UNLV Student Wellness Center.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Committee

The SHIP Committee is chaired by Jamie Davidson, Ph.D., AVP for Student Wellness and is comprised of approximately 34 representatives from student groups, schools, and departments across campus which include:

  • The Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (CSUN)
  • The Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA)
  • The Graduate College
  • Student Affairs
  • The Student Health Center
  • The School of Nursing
  • The Office of International Students and Scholars Compliance
  • The School of Dental Medicine
  • The School of Integrated Health Sciences
  • Sports Medicine
  • The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine

The SHIP Committee meets annually to review the usage and pricing of the prior year of the Student Health Insurance Plan as well as the proposed pricing for the upcoming year. The cost of the Student Health Insurance Plan is determined based on the rate history from prior years, market rates, and bids from insurance providers. All committee members vote to either approve or deny any proposed fee changes. The Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education has final authority to approve the rates. The Student Health and Accident Insurance rate is considered by the Board of Regents at their June meeting.
