UNLV Madrigal Invitational Festival

About the Festival and Participation

Eligibility

The following are invited to participate in this year's festival:

  • Choirs from public and private high schools in Nevada and neighboring states
  • Choirs of all sizes, configurations, and ability levels are welcome

Teachers/directors are encouraged to register their madrigal or chamber choir first, followed by other intermediate ensembles. Depending on the number of registration requests, advanced ensembles are accepted first. Be sure to indicate the level of each ensemble when registering.

Teachers/directors can register their ensemble(s) using the online registration form below. Teachers will be notified of registration confirmation no later than Sept. 23.

Cost

There is a $75 fee per registered ensemble. We will have refreshments available after each concert session for students, parents, and directors.

Repertoire

We are introducing a special session type just for this year: the first session of the afternoon will now be an “all sing” format, whereby schools can bring as many students as they want for one registration price, and we will practice and sing three simple SATB madrigals together. There will also be madrigal performances by UNLV students and members of the Las Vegas Master Singers. Schools participating in this session may bring as many students as they wish for the $75 registration fee. Schools must prepare the three madrigals before arrival to ensure a quality experience for all participants, but UNLV staff and students will lead the combined group in song!

The two evening sessions will remain the same traditional format that we all know and love: each ensemble will be invited to present and share its own selections.

To celebrate our 40th year of the Madrigal Festival, we ask that each ensemble prepared at least one madrigal to perform as a part of their session. This can be from any time period. The remainder of the concert program can be selected at the conductor’s discretion. Each ensemble may sing up to 17 minutes worth of repertoire. You are welcome to bring repertoire that is “in progress” and share the ideas and concepts behind the music.

As always, there will be NO ADJUDICATION! This is a celebration of choral community.

Attire

Ensembles are encouraged to wear their formal concert attire, if available.

Registration requests must be submitted through the online form by Friday, September 26.

Venue and Parking

All concerts are held at the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall on UNLV's main campus.

  • You may park either in the parking ramp near Ham hall (it costs $8 for the day), or you can park for free on the street, University Avenue, on the eastern side of Maryland Parkway, near University United Methodist Church.
  • Parking can get tricky around UNLV, so it is best if local students arrange to either be dropped off or carpool.
  • Bus parking is available along the drive-in and drive-out of the Ham Hall roundabout, south of Cottage Grove Avenue.
