Dr. Richard Harp was a leading international scholar of Renaissance studies, particularly of poet, essayist, and playwright Ben Jonson. He was a respected and effective teacher and mentor, sought out by his students to direct dissertation and thesis projects. Dr. Harp was the recipient of a Barrick Scholar Award and a Fulbright Award, in addition to other honors. He provided invaluable service to the department, university, and professor.

The Dr. Richard Layne Harp Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded to a student(s) meeting the following criteria:

  1. Student must have an undergraduate degree in English;
  2. Student must have a minimum undergraduate 3.2 GPA;
  3. Student may be full or part-time;
  4. Must be:
    1. an incoming student admitted to the UNLV MA or Ph.D. literature programs who will be pursing course work and/or possible thesis or dissertation project in Renaissance studies; OR
    2. A UNLV MA student who is nearing the completion of their program and has applied to Ph.D programs here or elsewhere to pursue Renaissance studies; OR
    3. A UNLV undergraduate student pursuing a degree in English and who has applied to MA or Ph.D. programs here or elsewhere to pursue Renaissance studies.

Recipients may not reapply for subsequent years.

*Unless otherwise noted, all students who fill out a FAFSA or alternate need form and meet the criteria for the scholarship will be considered. No other application is needed.

*Selected award winner’s name is due to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office by December 1st .
