Discuss Your Retirement
Talk to your supervisor about your plans to retire. Once you have decided on a date for retirement, send an email to hrexit@unlv.edu to notify Human Resources (HR) that you are planning on retiring. Please note that this notification does not take the place of an official resignation letter. However, the earlier HR is notified that you are leaving, the sooner we can take the appropriate action to ensure that you separation proceeds as smoothly as possible.
The email needs to include the following information:
- Your full name
- Department and contact number
- Your last day at work
Submit Your Resignation to Your Supervisor
The resignation needs to be submitted to your supervisor through Workday for approval. When selecting reason for resignation, select the retirement option in order to process correctly. Once the supervisor approves the resignation, the supervisor must initiate the termination business process within Workday to initiate the offboarding tasks needed to be completed.
Make Arrangements
If you are planning on continuing health insurance as a retiree, you need to make arrangements to begin receiving some form of retirement income from the university retirement plan. To be eligible to continue health insurance as a retiree, you need to meet the following criteria:

Apply for Medicare Part B
If you are age 65 or over when you retire, you are required to have Medicare Part B coverage. The state health plan will always pay secondary to Medicare Part B regardless of whether or not you have Medicare Part B coverage. Everyone is eligible to purchase Medicare Part B, and you will pay a premium for this coverage.
We encourage you to contact Medicare at least three months before you retire to apply for coverage. A delay in electing Medicare Part B will result in a 10% penalty applied towards all future Medicare Part B premiums. For additional information, contact Medicare directly at 800-633-4227.
